Conservatives in Congress and anti-abortion activists are applauding President Donald Trump for signing the executive action on Monday restoring the so-called Mexican City Policy which now prevents non-governmental organizations from giving funds towards abortions. This helps boost abortions from receiving US government funding.
The policy, originally put in place by the Reagan administration, was repealed by the Obama administration in 2009. Even during the Obama years, the US law prohibited direct funding for abortion services. Non-governmental organizations that had helped perform the procedure were allowed to receive funding for other programs. Some of that included contraception access and post-abortion care.
Non-governmental organizations that offer abortions with their family planning services will no longer receive any assistance from the US Agency for International Development which happens to be one of the biggest contributors to international development assistance.
This policy has been off and on since it first happened in 1985. Although, Democratic administrations had traditionally abolished the policy, but Republican reinstates it.
The White House Press Secretary, Sean Spicer had told reporters at a daily briefing that, “The President, it’s no secret, has made it very clear that he’s a pro-life president” and “He stands up for all Americans, including the unborn, and I think the reinstatement of this policy is not just something that echoes that value, but respects taxpayer funding as well.”
The reactions from the abortion activists and the Democrats was almost sudden.
